Earlier in the year, I, among many others, was looking forward to attending the WCMT in Pretoria, South Africa in July of 2020. Little did we know that the in person event would turn into a virtual one! Despite the setbacks that COVID-19 brought onto the Congress, attending virtually was still an unforgettable experience. Being able to view every valuable session was a luxury, something I would not have been able to do if it was an in person event!
However, one thing that cannot be replicated fully in an online experience is the immersion into the South African culture. Having the ability to experience the culture of another country first-hand is a major highlight of traveling abroad, and was something I was extremely excited for in attending the WCMT 2020. With that being said, the WCMT organizing committee did an outstanding job at moving the congress online, and I thoroughly enjoyed every part of it. I even cooked a traditional South African meal from home while watching some of the sessions to immerse myself into the culture as much as one can from home.
This experience is one that I will never forget. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to attend, and am already looking forward to the next WCMT, with high hopes of being able to attend in person. Thank you to all who made the WCMT 2020 a success!
