In today’s President Presents blog, I want to provide some information on the WFMT commissions. As elections for the new 2017-2020 Council are soon upon us, I thought it would be helpful for WFMT organizational members to review the roles of the commissions as you consider the nominees. To review the slate of current candidates please visit this link. The commissions of the World Federation include: Education & Training, Clinical Practice, Publications, Global Crises Intervention, Accreditation & Certification, Research & Ethics, Public Relations, and the World Congress Organizer. Each commission strives to include committee members who represent the 8 global regions of WFMT and who are experts in the commission’s specialty area. The WFMT Commissioners provide leadership in one of these eight areas.Education & Training: This commission promotes dissemination of knowledge regarding contemporary guidelines for the standards of the education and training of music therapists around the world.Clinical Practice: This commission works towards conveying a dynamic view of the clinical practice of the profession that is effective for music therapists and other professionals who are interested in knowing the scope of the discipline in achieving the common goal: the health and well-being of humans.Publications: This commission promotes the publication and dissemination of information about music therapy practice, education, research, and WFMT related topics, including WFMT’s online journal (Music Therapy Today).Global Crises Intervention: This commission seeks to support the needs of music therapists affected by or responding to crises across the world that result in traumatic stress. The group facilitates communication, coordination of services, and training among music therapists and maintains a collection of materials and information to use during current or on-going disasters or traumatic situations.Accreditation & Certification: This commission envisions a common set of ideals and principles, which provides a framework for accreditation and certification of music therapy practice worldwide.Research & Ethics: This commission promotes the integration of research and ethics into the practice of music therapy throughout the world. Further, it promotes dissemination of quality ethnomusicological, historical, qualitative, and quantitative research studies to better inform the practice of the profession.Public Relations: This commission has helped to facilitate the WFMT 2014-2017 Strategic Plan, which will determine the future directions of the WFMT for the development of music therapy worldwide. In the new term, 2017-2020, this commission will work towards promoting the WFMT and relaying information to stakeholders.World Congress Organizer: This commission is currently planning the 2017 WCMT in Tsukuba, Japan. The next Chair of this commission will be appointed once the next WCMT (2020) location and venue are secured.
