The 2012 Online Conference for Music Therapy (onlineconferenceformusictherapy.com) was a huge success! With over 90 attendees, 14 sessions, and two keynote presentations, many music therapists were tuned in to learning and networking. Music therapists from around the world (United States, Canada, Belgium, India, Bahrain, Cyprus, Australia, Taiwan, Malaysia) joined together for 24 hours of continuing education on February 18th.
The conference began with a keynote presentation from Kat Fulton. Ms. Fulton discussed Web Leadership and how to have meaningful online communication. Dr. Lucanne Magill provided another keynote presentation later in the conference. She informed the participants about current happenings in India and stressed the importance of a cross-cultural approach in music therapy. A variety of other topics were covered such as working with parents of children with special needs, research tips for clinicians, iPad applications for therapists, online education development, augmentative and alternative communication, and music therapy advocacy tips. The complete program can be found athttp://onlineconferenceformusictherapy.com/conference-program-calendar/.
Throughout the conference, attendees participated and networked by chatting to one another online. One of the unique features of this conference format is the ease of communicating with music therapists around the world. Another important aspect is that the sessions were recorded. This allowed attendees to be able to watch the sessions they may have missed during the 24-hours of the live conference later at their convenience and still get continuing education credits. The conference was pre-approved for the continuing education credits by the Canadian Association for Music Therapy and the Certification Board for Music Therapists.
