Nominations are open until the end of February for the next term’s council members. Commissioners and officers are elected at the WFMT Business Meeting at the World Congress of Music Therapy. Regional liaisons, executive assistant, and student delegates are appointed by the incoming president.
I have proposed a new commission titled Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA). Regional Liaison Dr. Daphne Rickson assisted with the following description.
The 2020-2023 World Federation of Music Therapy Council propose the establishment of an IDEA Commission which would use these principals to examine processes and procedures within the WFMT itself, and, when appropriate, within wider world music therapy communities. Equity and inclusion are promoted when barriers that impede engagement are removed. Increasing accessibility to support the participation of unique individuals in music therapy activities around the world will involve deconstructing existing concepts of music therapy (white, patriarchal, westernized approaches) with the aim “(to) radically imagine better ways of being together” (Thomas & Norris, 2021, para. 16).
Should the WFMT membership accept this proposition, a commissioner will be elected for it. Nominations are being taken with the understanding that if the membership does not vote to add the commission, people nominated for the respective chair position will not be voted upon to join the council. I have also proposed to add Regulation to the Education and Certification commission; should the proposition pass, the commission would be updated accordingly.
