Hello Readers,

Wishing you all a happy, peaceful, prosperous and a musical new year.

I am very happy to give you some updates on the music therapy happenings in Southeast Asia and this time specifically about India. The year 2012 witnessed an important development related to music therapy training in India. The Chennai based Chennai School of Music Therapy in collaboration with the music therapy department of the IMC University of Applied Sciences, Krems, Austria introduced the first music therapy program in the form of a one year post graduate diploma program from July 2012. The curriculum was jointly developed by Chennai School of Music Therapy with the IMC University of Applied Sciences, Krems , Austria integrating the local healing traditions and the healing techniques are clinically applied by the students. The School has a tie up with one of the best hospitals in the city global hospitals for providing internship training to the students which is the first of its kind in the country. Apart from me being the Program Director and Dr. Baishali Mukherjee also being on faculty at the School, visiting professors for the training program are Dr. Gerhard Tucek from the partner university, Dr. Lucanne Magill from California and Dr. Jorg Fachner from University of Jyvaskyla. There are also many other distinguished professors from the global music therapy community who are invited to give special lectures as a part of the course. There is also an online certificate program on music therapy which is open to health care professionals including medical professionals on music therapy facilitating and training them to integrate Music and Medicine in their work.

In February 2013, there will be an international conference in Pondicherry jointly organized by the Bharathi Educational Trust and the Chennai School of Music Therapy and all steps are being taken to develop music therapy as a part of the medical curriculum in the country. It is heartening to know that one of the medical colleges functioning under Bharathi Education Trust has integrated music medicine as a part of the medical curriculum for the academic year 2013-2014.

For further details on the international conference for participation in the conference, please contact info@chennaimusictherapy.org orimtcpondicherry@yahoo.in and visit the website
