The American Music Therapy Association held its annual conference a month earlier than usual this year—October 11-14, 2012. Institutes, meetings, and continuing education events preceded and followed the conference. A record number 1,600 attendees traveled to St. Charles, IL for the event at the Pheasant Run Resort. The conference theme was “Changing Winds: Innovation in Music Therapy” and, perhaps true to the theme, the conference started with a fire alarm going off on Sunday and ended with tornado activity on the following Sunday. Thirteen local music therapists and many members from the national office worked together to make the conference a success.
In addition to continuing education and networking, AMTA’s conference is also a time for celebration. Several awards were given this year, including a new award recognizing members’ advocacy efforts—the Changemaker Award for Music Therapy Advocacy.
We hope you will join us for the 2013 AMTA conference “Voices of the Sea” in Jacksonville, FL November 21-24. Prior to that, be sure to attend the Canadian Association for Music Therapy conference “Expanding Horizons” May 9-11, 2013 in Saskatoon, SK.
